Ayurvedic Kajal - Know it's importance and method of preparation

Ayurveda - The science of life not only aiming in the curative aspects of disease but also emphasising the importance of well being and how someone can maintain good health by elaborating daily routines seasonal routines etc.

While discussing eye care in ayurveda it is pretty much explained about the importance , benefits , method of preparation and application , indications and contraindications of kajal or collyrium.

In ayurvedic term kajal is known as ANJANAM simply means Eye salve. Eyes are repository of thejas, but have the risk of troubles especially from Kapha. Hence to avoid this, Kajal should be used.

 

MODE OF APPLICATION OF KAJAL

Application of kajal or nethra anjana is one of the special treatment done for eye disorders, medicated kajal is applied either with salaka (Applicator) or with finger tip from inner canthus to outer canthus of both the eyes either in the morning time or in the evening, Kajal application is not recommended during midday  when the eyes are fatigued by strong rays of sun .

After applying kajal , the eye balls should be  moved up and rotated slowly, the eyelids should also be moved slight by massaging over it,by these acts the kajal spreads to all places . But opening ,closing,squeezing or washing should not be done

 

INDICATIONS:

  • Refractive errors
  • Watery eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Computer vision syndrome
  • Eye strain
  • Night blindness
  • Stiffness and roughness of eye
  • Itching
  • Oedema of eye
  • Sliminess in eye

 

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Night time
  • During sleep
  • At midday
  • When eyes are fatigued by strong rays of sun.

METHOD  OF PREPARATION OF AYURVEDIC KAJAL

Take a piece of clean cotton cloth, dip it in decoction made out of sahadevi (Cyanthillium cinereum ) turmeric etc, dry this cloth in shade with proper observance of hygiene, make small barthis using this cloth , burn this cloth in a deepa, which is added with sesame oil, and collect the smoke over a clean lid which is placed above the deepa . scrape out the smoke residue and keep this  in a small , clean air tight container , mix this powder with a bit of pure coconut oil / castor oil and apply . This is how we can easily prepare medicated Kajal.

The human eye is organ of vision...good vision is critical and essential to conducting activities, We use our eyes in almost every activity we perform so good care of eyes is very essential, in this busy life we don’t get enough time for eye care , here comes the importance of application of medicated kajal this is an easy and effective way to give proper care where you get better effects in lesser time.
