Shishira Ritu: Navigating the Late Winter Chill with Ayurveda

As the calendar turns to January and February, we enter Shishira Ritu (Late Winter). While it shares the cold of Hemantha Ritu, the air becomes more biting, dry, and dehydrating. In Ayurveda, this is a critical transition period where Vata remains high and Kapha begins to accumulate, often leading to seasonal flus, respiratory congestion, and joint stiffness.

The Duration of Shishira Ritu

According to the Hindu lunar calendar and Ayurvedic texts, Shishira Ritu typically falls:

  • Months: Mid-January to Mid-March.
  • Hindu Months: Magha and Phalguna.
  • Significance: It marks the transition from the peak cold of winter toward the beginning of Spring (Vasanta Ritu).

Why this period is crucial for your health:

During these two months, the environmental cold is at its harshest and driest. At Keva Ayurveda, we observe a high influx of patients during this time seeking relief for:

  • Respiratory Issues: Increased congestion as Kapha begins to accumulate.
  • Joint Stiffness: Aggravated Vata due to the “biting” cold.
  • Dry Skin & Scalp: Dehydration of tissues (Dhatus).

Winter Care at Keva Ayurveda

At Keva Ayurveda, India’s first NABH-accredited Ayurveda hospital, we specialize in Ritucharya (seasonal regimens) to help you stay resilient during this peak cold season.

Why Your Body Feels Different in Shishira Ritu

During this season, the “Adana Kala” (period of dehydration) begins. The environment starts to pull moisture and energy from living beings. This is why you might notice increased skin dryness, lethargy, or “winter blues.”

1. Diet (Ahara): Fueling for the Cold

In Shishira, your digestive fire (Agni) remains high, but you must be careful not to trigger Kapha (mucus).

  • Taste Preferences: Favor Amla (sour) and Lavana (salty) to keep Vata in check, but introduce Katu (pungent) and Tikta (bitter) foods towards the end of the season to prevent Kapha buildup.
  • Must-Haves: Include ginger, long pepper (Pippali), honey, and warm sesame oil in your diet.
  • Avoid: Cold fermented foods, chilled desserts, and heavy, oily deep-fries that cause congestion.

2. Routine (Vihara) & Clinical Treatments

To counter the “Shishira” chill, Keva Ayurveda recommends specific therapeutic interventions:

  • Udvartana (Herbal Powder Massage): This is the best treatment for Shishira. It uses dry herbal powders to stimulate metabolism, reduce Kapha, and improve skin glow.
  • Nasya Therapy: As the “gateway to the head,” Nasya with medicated oils prevents dry sinuses, winter headaches, and respiratory allergies.
  • Swedana (Sudation): Herbal steam therapy helps liquefy toxins and opens up blocked channels.
